Forensic Handwriting Analysis and Examination

The term “forensic” means simply, “having to do with the law.” Handwriting Analysis, or Graphology, is the study of Personality Traits in Handwriting. So forensic handwriting analysis is often used for character profiling for law enforcement or legal standing. Used as a tool to understand human behavior, it has many applications. A skilled Handwriting Analyst is able to tell very detailed information about the writer’s personality.  This is why handwriting is often referred to as ‘brain writing’ due to the impulses originating in the brain that travel through the nervous system  and controls the movements that make up handwriting.  Such things revealed include:

  • Ego, need for acceptance, initiative, assertiveness, etc.
  • Depression, suicidal tendencies, abuse, addiction, etc.
  • Violent tendencies, criminal traits, unresolved anger, mental & physical illness, etc.
  • Intellect, creativity, organization, honesty, etc.
  • Self-confidence, self-esteem, integrity, types of hobbies or work suit them best, etc.
  • Relationship styles as it relates to interpersonal situations, etc.
  • Productivity, resourcefulness, determination, physical drive, mental energy, etc.
  • Vulnerability to stress, social skills, moodiness, manipulation, etc.

Common Uses of Forensic Handwriting Analysis

Handwriting Analysis is a reliable and objective method of personality assessment and can be used in:

  • Banks: forgeries, fraud, theft
  • Business: employment and pre-termination assessments, promotions
  • Compatibility: business and personal
  • Courts: expert witness for document examination or states of mind
  • Creditors: credit reliability
  • Forensics: jury selection, character assessments .

But how and why does it work?

Handwriting is as an instantaneous photograph of your mind. Your nervous system acts as a wire from brain to hand.  A thought in your brain is transmitted by electrical impulses through the nervous system and fibers of your body, arm, hand and fingers.  The fingers are only vehicles that put it in writing.

The thoughts and feelings in the human mind have an immediate impact in the formation of handwriting.  You will be able to spot differences in the handwriting by comparing your own writing samples written in various moods when you are angry, happy, tired or feeling sick. When you compare these different samples you will be able to see noticeable differences in pen stroke usage, even though your handwriting style remains basically the same.

Handwriting is like an instantaneous photograph of the mind.  Just like finger prints, no two handwritings are identical.

Or, for a more “scientific” related explanation, :

Some psychoanalysts and psychiatrists refer to the study of handwriting analysis as Neuro-Analysis.

Neuro-Analysis is the combination of modern neurosciences with the empirical study of personality. Over the years, Behavioral Scientists and handwriting experts have categorized neuro-muscular tendencies as they are correlated with specific observable personality traits.

Each personality trait is represented by a common neurological brain pattern in each individual possessing that trait. Each common neurological brain pattern has an associated neuro-mechanical micro-movement tendency.  Therefore, every person, regardless of sex, age race, ethnic background, or language with that personality trait will share the same neuro-muscular tendency.

In plain English, this explanation of handwriting simply means that there are very small neuro-muscular movements that are the same for every person who has a particular personality trait.  The movements are so tiny that they have to be graphically frozen to be identified. Handwriting is an example of this graphically frozen movement. Analyzing and interpreting that data is the science of neuro-analysis. It takes handwriting analysis and the neuro-sciences one step further.
